Rejtan. Fall of Poland (sometimes Rejtan at the Warsaw Sejm)
This picture is not only a description of certain historical events, it is also a warning to Poland.
- Title: Rejtan. Fall of Poland (sometimes Rejtan at the Warsaw Sejm)
- Author: Jan Matejko (1838-1893)
- With his paintings, Matejko joined the nationwide discussion on the causes of the fall of his homeland. According to him, Poland was not a passive victim of a conspiracy of neighboring powers, but a victim of private interests of some of its citizens.
- The main character of the painting is Tadeusz Rejtan - an envoy of the Nowogródek region, who decided to oppose the approval of the First Partition of Poland by the Seym in 1773.
- Three Polish traitors: Stanisław Szczęsny Potocki, Adam Poniński, and Franciszek Ksawery Branicki, who contributed to the fall of the country. These characters could never meet at the same time and place. However, the artist wanted to show the tragic vision of Poland, and not a chronicle.
- Above the heads of the traitors, there is a portrait of Tsarina Katarzyna, who wanted to weaken Poland.
